TAKING YOUR BIKE ON EUROPEAN TRAINS

Taking the train to Europe and thinking about travelling with your bike? We've all the information you'll need for taking bikes on European trains.

TRAVELLING WITH YOUR BIKE ON INTERNATIONAL TRAINS

Bikes can be brought as hand luggage onto all trains if they are folded or dismantled and placed in a bike cover (max. 120 x 90cm).  For unfolded bikes there are other options available, depending on the railway company. 

Eurostar trains

Folded bikes in a bag under 85cm travel free. Larger or non-folding bikes in a bag can be booked in advance with a registered baggage service (for £30).

Thalys trains

Only folded or dismantled bikes, placed in a cycle bag (max 120x90 cm) can be transported in Thalys trains. You do not need to pay any extra fees.

TGV Lyria trains

There are 4 spaces for assembled bikes on each train. You can book a space for you bike but you must do so at the same time as your regular ticket. The cost of a bike space is around £10. Alternatively, you can carry your bike in a bag free of charge if it is not bigger than120x90cm.

TGV Italy, Germany, Brussels, Luxembourg, Spain

Folded bikes or regular bikes with a removed front wheel, placed into a case of 120x90cm max, can be taken within the TGV trains between France, Italy, Germany, Brussels, Luxembourg and Spain. No extra fees will be charged.

TRAVELLING WITH YOUR BIKE ON FRENCH TRAINS

France has international and regional trains. You can bring your bike in any of them, provided they are folded and placed in a special cover not exceeding 120x90cm. Bear in mind, this is subject to the discretion of the train manager, particularly on busy trains. For unfolded bicycles however, there are other options!

Train Express Régional (TER) trains

Bikes can be placed free of charge in the special areas. These are limited, and you can not book in advance. Therefore we recommend that you arrive at the platform well in advance. Please note that there are certain routes on which you can not take a bike!

Transilien and RER trains in Île de France

Unfolded bikes are allowed from Monday to Friday before 6:30 AM, between 9:30 AM and 4:30 PM and after 7:30PM, and on weekends or school holidays.

Intercités trains

You can take your bike for free on trains without a reservation. However, there are only 20 places available per train. On Intercités trains with compulsory reservation you must buy a ticket for your bike at the same time as your regular ticket. This can not be done online.

TGV trains

There are a limited number of services will take fully assembled bikes, there are usually only 4 spaces per train. The cost of a bike space is around £10. Alternatively, you can carry a bike free of charge if carried in a bag no bigger than 120x90cm.
