Chocolate box pretty - be sure to taste some too
Whether you choose to visit in summer or in winter the pretty town of Annecy boasts stunning views and an enviable location on the banks of Lake Annecy.
Built between the 12th and 16th centuries, Annecy Castle has become the historical symbol of Annecy and dominates the old town. Formerly home to the Counts of Geneva the castle has been restored to its former glory and now houses a museum and the Alpine Lakes Regional Observatory.
Don't forget to check out The Queen's Tower before you go - it's the oldest part of the chateau.
Annecy's medieval Old Town is straight out of the pages of a fairytale. Criss-crossed by canals and small streams it's easy to see why the town has become known as the Venice of Savioe. Pretty pastel coloured buildings line the canals and in the summer floral displays create a riot of colour. Don't miss the Palais de l'Isle, the city's oldest building, which served as a prison for more than 600 years.
Tip: From the Old Town, you can easily walk down to the lakefront to take a stroll through the Gardens of Europe.
